Visually Impaired bowlers from across Wales descended on Haverfordwest Bowls Club for The Welsh Association of Vision Impaired Bowlers (WAVIB) National Championships sponsored by Specsavers, on 23rd to 25th June.
Players competed for the four titles on offer with the winners and runners-up now eligible for the forthcoming UK Internationals in September.
Julie Thomas made a remarkable achievement by retaining her title in the Lady’s competition, defeating competitors who have the highest levels of sight allowable under world vision impaired bowls rules including current UK medallists whilst she herself is completely blind.
Mike Price won the Men’s B1 tournament, defeating the current UK gold medallist Jack Lloyd in a closely contested final with only 2 shots separating the pair.
Gilbert Miles won the Men’s B2 and B3 competition, while Toby Warren won the Men’s B4 tournament. Both players from West Glamorgan played well over several days and held off stiff competition to seal victory.
Welsh Team Manager John Wilson, said: “These championships were a great success producing some very high quality bowling.”
WAVIB welcome players of all ages and abilities. If you are interested in playing, please contact John Wilson on 01792 895865.
