Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby made history, winning an unprecedented sixth IWRF European Championships gold medal following a 49-41 victory over Sweden yesterday, writes Nathaniel Holland.
The final was a repeat of the 2015 tournament, which GB won by a point in Finland two years ago. After a nail biting opening two quarters with the score locked at 25-25, the reigning champions ramped up the pressure and managed to secure the win in Germany.
It was also a historic day for the France team in the bronze medal match as they picked up their first ever IWRF European Championships medal with a 53-48 victory over Denmark. Denmark, who finished third in Finland two years ago were unable to get the better of Olvier Cuisin’s French squad.
In the battle for the minor places, Ireland ended the week on a high, beating Finland 52-43 as they finished seventh in the eight team tournament. It was the only victory in Koblenz for the Wheels in Green in a fairly even match up with Finland, who lost all five of their matches.
Poland and Germany battled it out for fifth place with Poland just edging out the host nation with a 46-39 victory in front of a good home crowd on Saturday morning.
